I wouldn’t say that this is a great map aesthetically, but I do enjoy the color ramp because it readily illustrates population growth and loss. The effect of gentrification pushing Hispanic New Yorkers out of the East and West sides of Manhattan and into Central Harlem and the Bronx is dramatic.

I was recently hired as an independent GIS contractor for Common Cause NY and I’ll be making demographic and Congressional maps such as this one for their redistricting blog! My job is to draw district lines based on a set of non-partisan criteria that emphasizes the representation of communities of interest. This is a map of current Assembly districts in the Binghamton area, but soon I’ll have the opportunity to draw my own new district ideas.

I love this project, because I’ve always wanted to gerrymander! In all seriousness, I am incredibly grateful for this position and am so glad that they decided to take a chance on me and my maps. I hope I can give them what they’re looking for!
